Fall Events

  • "Free My PC"?
    • Event for people to bring in their computers so that we can install FOSS on them
-Install: Firefox, Thunderbird, Gaim, Filezilla, GIMP, Cdex, Audacity, OO.o, Clam AV, others (?)
-Games: Wesnoth, Armagaetron, Liquid War
-Music: MP3s that are CC-licensed
-Virus: clean up spyware, viruses, and install McAfee (not free)
    • Purpose: To tell people about FOSS, refer to websites, invite to FFC meeting
    • When: Early in the semester; Weeks of Welcome?
    • Who: FFC, Florida Linux Users (?), CIRCA/Helpdesk (?), Technology Cabinet (?)
    • Needs: Project lead, flyers/advertising, tabling, power, tent (?), demo computer
  • Film / Concert / Karaoke / Tetris competition (?)

Lobbying the University

  • Oppose the Napster Tax
  • Create a permanent student seat on the Information Technology Advisory Committee
  • Learn more about and be active in discussion over Microsoft site licensing
  • Learn more about and be active in discussion over ICARUS; Consider hosting a forum (?)
  • Explore Web standards compliance for university websites
  • Advocate open file formats for university documents

Activism

  • Encourage the use of CC
    • Promote Archive.org, Flickr, Magnatune, etc. (especially at Norman Hall)
    • Encourage students and faculty to license work CC
    • Free CC music for iPods
    • Explore CC usage at University Press of Florida
    • Set up website especially for students to CC license their school papers and register with Turnitin service
  • Open access research
  • Possible digitization of PD library materials, dissertations/theses
  • Explore licensing of university technologies
    • Software, business methods, biological patents, etc.
    • UAEM EAL for medical
  • Explore free software on lab computers, software CD/Web site
  • Creation of syllabus.ufl.edu so professors and students have easy access to syllabi
  • Encourage the Alligator to release itself under CC
  • Free Culture Day
  • Site for CC licensing of student papers
  • GRU Telecom Bill

Opportunities

  • Free Culture and the Digital Library Symposium at Emory University
    • Lessig the main speaker, $115/person to be sent to SG for approval
  • SG Cabinet Applications are available and are due April 4th at 5pm
  • Florida Blue Key trip to Tallahassee for Legislative day - $20 due tomorrow by noon in room 312 of the Reitz

Florida Free Culture Minutes Reitz Union Room 285 31 March 2005

President Gavin Baker called the meeting to order at 6:10 pm

Attendance: Kenny, Alex Companioni, Ashley Wills, Pedro Alcocer, Gavin Baker, Greg Haines, Eldo Varghese

Opportunities: i. Free Culture and the Digital Library Symposium at Emory University with Lessig as the main speaker. The symposium is not targeted at students – more academically oriented

ii. SG Applications are due April 4th at 5pm

iii. Florida Blue Key trip to Tallahassee for Legislative Day - $20 due noon Friday

iv. Applications for the Reitz Union Board and the O’Connell Center Board are due soon

v. Essential Medicine is looking to start a new group

SG Funding i. “Free my PC��? – advertising in thefacebook and the Alligator, flyers, tent (?)

ii. $35 for a banner

iii. Printing general flyers

iv. Emory University Symposium – request money for 3 people to attend ($345), half the travel expenses, and accommodations

v. Grant Writing Workshop – $25/person; for when FC.o becomes a non-profit organization; Gavin, Eldo, and Pedro expressed interest in attending Fall Events: i. “Free My PC��? Event for people to bring in their computers so that we can install FOSS on them Install software, games, music and virus protection tailored to the individual user Purpose: To tell people about FOSS, refer to websites, invite to FFC meeting When: Weeks of Welcome (?) – Pedro going to contact WoW Where: North Lawn, Reitz Union Collonade, or HUB Who: FFC, Florida Linux Users (?), CIRCA/Helpdesk (?), Technology Cabinet (?) Needs: Project lead, flyers/advertising, tabling, power, tent (?), demo computer Follow-up with people after servicing their computer to ask about possible improvements Ask EFF and/or CC for free stuff to give out

ii. No Second Event for the fall – possibly two events during the spring semester

Priorities: i. Oppose the Napster Tax – focus on the students and try to change their opinion on the issue, rather than focusing on SG

ii. Create a permanent student seat on the Information Technology Advisory Committee

iii. Learn more about and be active in the discussion over Microsoft licensing. Examine the cost to benefit ratio of fighting against it.

iv. Learn more about and be active in the discussion over ICARUS. Possibility of mass mailings to incoming freshmen next spring if ICARUS is still an issue. Funding for the mailings could come from local apartments complexes, EFF, or the Ford Foundation Recruitment: i. Methods: Tabling, listservs, professors

ii. Target Groups: political - democrats, republicans, libertarians; fine arts, business, law, medical Meeting adjourned at 8:20 pm.
