(Re)Create
From Florida Free Culture Wiki
This is an event that happened on the November 27th and 28th, 2006. Gavin came up with the name (Re)Create and we ran with it. I thought it was great fun and a good way to engage people by doing something more interesting than sit behind a table with a display board and sign-up sheet.
And here's some photos of the event on Flickr.
[edit] Report from Day 1
Ashley, Martin, Nile, Gavin, Gloria, and Hendrik worked on collages and completed 4 of them with 2 unfinished. Eldo and Vyki also came out to staff the event. We talked to a few people about copyright, free culture, and illegal art. Nile was disappointed that no passers-by sat down and remixed with us; he suspects this is because we didn't have any unoccupied staffers to engage people and encourage them to help and because of lack of advertising. We did have some people pass by who were excited about the event but couldn't stop to remix, including one who commented that she thought the event was great, as she was an art student and collage was 'her medium.'
Thanks to everyone who staffed the event and especially Ashley, Vyki, and Gavin for lugging a bunch of heavy as rock boxes-o-magazines to and from Jordan's office with me (=nile). Thanks to Jordan for letting us use his closet to store our contraband!
[edit] Report from Day 2
Eldo, Vyki, Lindsay, Gavin, and Nile staffed. The second day was more successful in terms of talking to people. Three "civilians" sat down and created collages and one of them donated theirs to us. Thanks a heck of a lot to Gavin for taking the magazines home with him for storage.
[edit] For Next Time
- A big sign that says something along the lines of "Come Make A Collage!" or "Ask Us About Our Illegal Activities!" or "Be A Pirate! Yar!"
- A sign-up sheet for the mailing list so people don't just go "Oh, neat!" and run away forever.
- Glue sticks and other cutting implements (we only had white/liquid/school glue and scissors).
- No losing people's collages!
