Letter to the editor re: BlackBerry patent

Gavin has a letter to the editor in Thursday’s Alligator, “BlackBerry lawsuit shows flaws in system“, responding to Tuesday’s article “Berry Blackout“.

By granting too many patents without concern for the quality of the application, the Patent and Trademark Office has encouraged a wild land grab.

Now entrepreneurs can’t take two steps without treading on someone else’s territory.

Sexy new site design

I hope the title didn’t get you too excited, but we’ve got some cool news: J.C. has updated WordPress, installed a new pretty theme, and also gifted us with a MediaWiki install.

That means FFC has a wiki for the first time, albeit a very young and not-quite-ready-for-the-limelight wiki. You can check it out here. You can also access the wiki by typing in uf.freeculture.org/wiki

Say hi to the Wikimonster while you’re there. (He’s the magical entity that completes your work, as long as you post it on the wiki. Really the secret of how we get so much done as an organization…)

We’ll be taking other steps to improve the Web site in the next few weeks, so stay tuned. Remember, you can subscribe to our RSS feed and get the latest Free Culture news in your aggregator of choice. (Here’s an intro to RSS in Firefox to get you started.) Be sure to check out the international Free Culture blog, too.
