Zombies!

Low-budget horror classic Night of the Living Dead (1968) shook up the film industry and inspired upstart filmmakers worldwide. Thanks to a legal technicality, the film is not copyrighted, making it legal to copy and modify.

In 2004, FreeCulture.org organized Undead Art, a remix contest for Night of the Living Dead. The winner, short film “How to Survive a Zombie Epidemic,” is a satirical take on the horror genre. It’s released under a Creative Commons license, so it’s also free to share.

Join us as we screen both the original and the remix. Free candy corn! but bring your own candy, popcorn, beer, etc.

The Civic Media Center is on W. University Ave, just 2 blocks west of campus. Bus #5 stops nearby.

FFC calls for student seat in IT decisions

In a letter to the editor published in Wednesday’s Alligator, Florida Free Culture president Gavin Baker called for student representation on UF’s Information Technology Advisory Committee, or ITAC.

More than 20 university committees have student representatives who sit with university decision makers and voice student concerns. If students can guide decisions on everything from housing to affirmative action, why is information technology any different?

Read the whole letter online here.

Free Culture hopes this letter will draw attention to the lack of student representation on ITAC and encourage the creation of one or more student seats.

I hope to meet with Associate Provost Hoit soon to discuss the situation. I’ll let you know how it goes.

UF Has a Jabber Server

I didn’t know this until now, but apparently UF runs its own Jabber server. (Jabber is an open source, open protocol instant messenging service. Try it with Gaim on Linux or Windows, or Adium on Mac.)

There’s a chatroom for library questions. If you’ve never used Jabber before, instructions are here. If you already have a Jabber account, connect to room library on server conference.jabber.ufl.edu. The room is open Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

For more information about the UF server, see the Open Systems Group Web site.
