SG Questionnaire

Here’s the questionnaire I prepared for candidates in the Student Government election. As the results come in, I’ll post them here.

Florida Free Culture, a student group at UF, is conducting a questionnaire to gauge the beliefs of Student Government candidates on free culture issues that relate to SG. FFC will announce the answers to the questionnaire at our March 14 meeting. Additionally, FFC will post the results on our Web site. FFC will not endorse a party or candidate, nor encourage its members to vote for any party or candidate. Thank you for your participation.

What is your position on the following:

* Open access to the results of government-funded scientific research? (“Open access” means making findings and data freely available online.)
* The use of free / open source software on university computers? (Free, or open source, software is software that provides certain freedoms to users, e.g. the rights to modify and redistribute.)
* The use of open file formats for university documents? (“Open file formats” are file formats based on open standards developed by multiple parties. For instance, Microsoft Word’s .doc file format is not an open format, but rather a proprietary format developed by Microsoft.)
* The ICARUS network monitoring system?
* Requiring professors to post course materials online?
* Requiring all students to pay for a music downloading program?
* Digitizing books from university libraries which are in the public domain? (The “public domain” consists of all works whose copyright has expired. Works in the public domain are free from any restrictions on use.)
